Carbon washing towers are critical in industrial gas purification, where their internal components, including packing and tower internals, directly impact efficiency. However, these components often suffer damage, reducing tower performance. Below are key reasons for such damage:
First, corrosion significantly weakens internals. In wet environments with acidic gases or impurities, metal packing and internal structures corrode over time, thinning walls and reducing structural strength. This is especially common in towers handling flue gas or chemical byproducts, leading to leaks or collapse.
Second, abrasion from solid particles causes wear. Gases or liquids carrying dust, ash, or sediment frequently冲刷 (scour) packing surfaces at high velocities. Repeated friction grinds down packing materials, increasing void spaces and decreasing mass transfer efficiency. Over time, this can fragment packing, leading to blockages or uneven flow distribution.
Third, clogging exacerbates damage. Accumulation of pollutants, scale, or unreacted residues in packing gaps restricts fluid flow, raising pressure drops. This forces the system to operate under higher stress, causing packing to shift or warp. Prolonged clogging also creates uneven temperature zones, accelerating thermal stress on internals.
Thermal stress, from sudden temperature fluctuations, further contributes. When the tower experiences rapid heating or cooling, packing and internal parts expand/contract unevenly, inducing fatigue cracks. This is particularly problematic in systems with frequent start-stop cycles or heat-intensive industrial processes.
Finally, improper installation and maintenance worsen issues. Misalignment during setup, over-tightening, or under-sized packing can cause mechanical stress. Neglecting regular inspections—such as checking for corrosion, abrasion, or clogging—allows damage to escalate, leading to costly failures.
Addressing these causes through material selection, regular maintenance, and operational adjustments is key to protecting carbon washing tower internals and ensuring long-term reliability.
